A Closer Look at the 1972 Topps Football High Numbers
Most collectors in 1972 only saw the first two series of football cards (263 total cards) and thought that was the complete set. The third series, meanwhile, is only 88 cards (Nos. 264-351) and even the mention that they existed came as a surprise to the average collector late in 1972 or even the next year, as very few packs hit retail shelves. The 1972 set also marked the last time of the era the company distributed cards in series.

Asking price for Jackie Robinson rookie of the year award cut 95%
Lelands announced that Robinson's rookie of the year award trophy is available for bidding. Robinson won the first such award for his historic 1947 season with the Brooklyn Dodgers; the award was renamed in his honor in 1987.

The award is accompanied by a letter of authentication from Robinson's widow, Rachel. Catherine Mathis, a spokesman for Lelands, said the company first sold the award on Rachel Robinson's behalf about 20 years ago and that the buyer then is the seller now.

Jordan's shoes from the famous flu game of the 1997 NBA finals were sold for more than $100,000 in an online auction Thursday.

The Nike Air Jordan XII shoes were owned by a Utah Jazz ball boy who befriended Jordan when the Chicago Bulls visited Salt Lake City. Jordan was playing with what he thought was the flu, but still led the Bulls to a key victory in the NBA Finals.

First look: 2014 Topps Series 2 baseball cards
Topps released the breakdowns for 2014 Topps Series 2, the second installment of its flagship baseball card product. Its update arrives on June 13 with one autograph or memorabilia card in every 36-pack hobby box or one autograph and two Relics in every 10-pack HTA Jumbo box.

Series 2 will continue where the first installment leaves off with 330 more base cards and a number of parallels for every card. There will be the customary Gold (/2,014), Camo (/99), Black (hobby-only /63), Pink (/50), 1/1 Platinum, Red Hot foil (six per standard box), Clear (/10) and 1/1 printing plates to chase. There also will be silks for some players with those limited to 50.

Auburn Recovers Alabama Game-Winning Football Valued at $100,000
Teams provide their own balls when on offense or attempting a field goal. Because Alabama was kicking, the ball Davis ran back was provided by the Crimson Tide. The ball was retrieved by a ball boy amid the celebration. Auburn, unlike Alabama, marks its footballs so a particular ball can later be identified.

One memorabilia expert said the ball could be worth as much as $100,000 if the Tigers win the national championship.

Louisville's Chane Behanan cleared in ring scandal
Behanan was cleared of having any involvement in the auction of his 2012 Final Four ring on a sports memorabilia site.

Louisville players were given light gold rings with a large diamond centered in ruby red and surrounded by a circle of smaller diamonds for advancing to the NCAA national semifinals.

Chane Behanan's Final Four ring found on auction site; was it stolen?
University of Louisville basketball player Chane Behanan’s 2012 Final Four ring was removed from auction Wednesday morning by Grey Flannel, a leading sports memorabilia seller, at the Behanan family’s request.

“We have been informed by Chane's mother that this NCAA Final Four ring was indeed stolen from the Behanan family,” Grey Flannel’s website reads. “This lot has been removed from the sale. Please place no bids.”

The lawsuit against 893 websites that allegedly sold counterfeit goods using the plaintiffs' trademarks has ended. The Northern District of Illinois ordered that each defendant pay statutory damages of $2 million.

The massive judgment was not the plaintiffs' only goal. They wanted those 893 websites shutdown. And they got that, too.

National Hockey Card Day returns to the U.S. for third straight year
The day is slated for January 18, 2014 in Canada and the United States. Upper Deck has promoted this day throughout the last several years to get hockey fans into hobby shops across North America.

The U.S. set will contain 21 cards with 11 rookies. Collectors will get a free pack of cards when they go to a participating hobby shop, and can get the 21st card with a $10 purchase of an Upper Deck product.

Snead's 1949 Masters trophy valued at $100,000
The 1949 Masters trophy awarded to Sam Snead will lead a sale of golfing memorabilia at Heritage Auctions on December 6-7.

The Masters trophies did not exist at the time of Snead's victory - they were produced a number of decades later and presented retroactively. A recent sale saw a trophy presented to Snead for his 1946 Open victory realise $263,000.

Paralleling the approach that Topps used in its 2012 Topps Archives Baseball set, the 2013 Topps Archives Football set depicts players on four different vintage Topps cards designs: 1959, 1976, 1985 and 1986. Online auction offers a day with Derek Jeter
