Signature Study: Ty Cobb
During the 1940s and 1950s, Cobb was inundated with autograph requests. More modern signatures are still legible but are signed in a slightly more reckless hand. The length exhibited in earlier signatures is replaced with a signature shorter in length and increased height. Cobb’s signature remained sound for just about his entire life.

Ruth 1932 Caramel Card Nears $43K in Memory Lane’s $1.24 Million Sale
A high-grade 1932 U.S. Caramel set was broken up and sold card by card, as Memory Lane Inc. put the cap on its Spring Fever Rarities Auction. The prize card in the set, a PSA 8 Babe Ruth sold for a record-setting $42,767, one of several new marks set as bidding wound to a close early Sunday.

In all, more than 900 lots were sold in the auction, realizing more than $1.24 million.

Corked Mickey Mantle bat hits the auction block
Grey Flannel Auctions is auctioning the Hillerich & Bradsby Co. bat, which was studied by PSA/DNA authenticator John Taube. Taube noticed alterations at the top of the bat’s barrel, and X-rays showed that the barrel had been drilled and filled with cork.

“This is the first corked bat of Mantle that we have seen or heard of,” Taube wrote in his report.

Upper Deck wanted to pay tribute to Doc Jacobs who made headlines a few weeks back when he got a tryout with an iconic baseball franchise after a chance meeting he had with Tommy Lasorda at a charity event. When Lasorda heard about Doc’s quest to reach the big leagues, he turned his organization on to him and Doc earned a tryout with the club.
